Overview
We are seeking a driven, experienced General Sales Manager (GSM) to lead and develop a high-performing automotive sales team. This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the dealership’s sales operations, including training and coaching sales staff, implementing a disciplined TO (turnover) process, hiring and managing salespeople, and ensuring consistent used vehicle acquisition to maintain inventory levels.
The ideal candidate is a proven leader with strong automotive retail experience, a track record of building winning sales teams, and the ability to drive both volume and profitability while maintaining a strong customer experience.
Responsibilities
- Sales Leadership & Performance
- Lead, motivate, and manage the sales team to achieve monthly, quarterly, and annual sales targets.
Training & Development
- Train and mentor new and existing sales staff on sales process, product knowledge, CRM usage, and customer experience.
- Implement continuous sales training programs to improve closing skills, objection handling, and customer engagement.
- Develop leaders within the sales team to support growth and succession planning.
Hiring & Team Management
- Recruit, interview, hire, and onboard high-performing sales professionals.
- Set clear expectations, performance goals, and accountability standards.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and provide coaching and development plans.
- Foster a positive, competitive, and professional sales culture.
Used Vehicle Acquisition & Inventory Management
- Oversee used vehicle acquisition strategy including trade-ins, auction purchases, and direct-from-consumer buying opportunities.
- Monitor market pricing and inventory turn to ensure a balanced and profitable used vehicle inventory.
- Purchase and maintain proper inventory levels and aging targets.
- Evaluate trades and assist in structuring deals to maximize profitability.
Operational Excellence
- Ensure consistent execution of the dealership’s sales process from greeting through delivery.
- Maintain accurate CRM usage and follow-up procedures.
- Collaborate with F&I and other departments to ensure smooth deal flow and maximize profit opportunities.
- Maintain compliance with dealership policies and industry regulations.
- Monitor individual and team performance metrics including closing ratios, gross profit, and unit volume.
- Conduct daily sales meetings, desk deals, and provide ongoing coaching to maximize performance.
- Maintain a structured and consistent TO (turnover) process to improve closing ratios and customer satisfaction.
Experience
- 5+ years of automotive sales management experience (Sales Manager or General Sales Manager preferred)
- Proven track record of achieving sales and profit targets
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team-building skills
- Experience managing used vehicle acquisition and inventory strategy
- Deep understanding of TO processes, deal structuring, and CRM management
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- High level of professionalism and customer service focus
- 5+ years of automotive sales management experience (Sales Manager or General Sales Manager preferred)
- Proven track record of achieving sales and profit targets
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team-building skills
