Job Description: Automotive Shop General ManagerPosition Overview
We are a growing, customer-focused automotive repair company expanding into multiple locations. We are looking for a high-level Shop General Manager to lead daily operations at our new location in Hammond, develop our team, implement standard systems, and drive strong financial results from day one.
The General Manager has full operational authority over this new shop, working directly with the District Manager to hire, train, coach, and develop team members. The ideal candidate is a powerhouse operator who knows how to build a strong culture from the ground up, drive PIA sales, elevate service advisor performance, and hold a team accountable. Because community connections matter to us, we strongly prefer a leader who is local to the Hammond area.
Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & People Management
- Team Oversight: Lead and manage Service Advisors, Technicians, Shop Foremen, and support staff.
- Talent Management: Full authority to recruit, hire, onboard, coach, and discipline employees to build a winning team.
- Accountability: Conduct weekly performance meetings and individual KPI reviews with staff.
- Culture: Foster a positive, high-energy, and collaborative shop culture.
- Staffing: Ensure appropriate staffing levels to maximize shop capacity and meet business volume.
Operational Excellence
- Workflow Management: Oversee the daily workflow, bay utilization, and overall efficiency of the shop.
- Process Execution: Ensure consistent execution of digital vehicle inspections (DVIs), accurate estimating, proactive customer communication, and quality repair processes.
- SOP Compliance: Enforce company policies, safety standards, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Facility Care: Maintain an exceptionally clean, organized, safe, and professional workspace.
Sales & Financial Performance
- Sales Leadership: Drive and improve PIA (Presenting Inspection & Advising) sales performance.
- Advisor Coaching: Hold service advisors accountable to close rates, estimate accuracy, and Average Repair Order (ARO) goals.
- KPI Tracking: Monitor and optimize shop metrics including car count, ARO, gross profit margins, technician productivity/efficiency, and comeback rates.
- Financial Partnership: Partner with the District Manager on budgeting, forecasting, and localized profit planning.
Customer Satisfaction & Systems
- Escalation Resolution: Directly handle major customer escalations beyond the service advisor level to protect shop reputation.
- Retention: Implement strategies to elevate the customer experience, driving local customer loyalty and positive online reviews.
- Tekmetric Mastery: Act as the shop’s expert user for Tekmetric, ensuring proper usage of DVIs, scheduling, communications, and reporting tools.
Vendor & Equipment Management
- Vendor Relations: Maintain strong, profitable relationships with parts vendors.
- Asset Management: Oversee equipment maintenance, calibration, and tool inventory.
- Inventory Control: Monitor and manage in-shop inventory levels to minimize waste.
QualificationsRequired:
- Experience: 3–5+ years of automotive repair shop management or dealership service management experience.
- Software: Tekmetric proficiency is non-negotiable.
- Sales Track Record: Proven ability to drive PIA sales, close rates, and ARO growth.
- Leadership: Strong leadership skills with experience managing a team of 5–10+ employees (hiring, coaching, and holding teams accountable).
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of automotive repair workflows, parts sourcing, and estimating.
- Financial Acumen: Ability to analyze and manage shop KPIs, financial reports, and margins.
Preferred:
- Local Candidate: Living in or deeply familiar with the Hammond area (highly preferred).
- Experience launching a new shop location or scaling processes.
- Experience implementing new operational systems.
- ASE certification or specialized service advisor sales training background.
