The General Sales Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing all sales-related operations at the dealership. This includes managing the sales, finance, BDC, delivery, and lot teams while ensuring the dealership meets its sales targets, profitability goals, and customer satisfaction standards.

This role provides strategic leadership for the entire sales organization by developing departmental plans, managing inventory strategy, and collaborating with executive leadership to drive growth and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development

Hire, train, coach, and oversee the performance of new and used vehicle sales managers
Provide leadership and direction to Sales, Finance, BDC, Delivery, and Lot teams
Conduct regular sales meetings and establish ongoing sales training programs
Provide performance feedback and career development guidance to department personnel
Ensure all team members follow dealership policies, procedures, and sales systems

Sales Performance & Strategy

Develop and execute departmental sales strategies to achieve dealership growth targets
Establish annual and monthly objectives for unit sales, gross profit, expenses, and operating profit
Participate in the preparation of the dealership’s annual sales forecast
Monitor departmental performance and implement improvements as needed
Review and approve deals prior to posting

Inventory & Merchandising

Work with the Dealer and General Manager to determine appropriate new and used vehicle inventory levels
Oversee vehicle merchandising and lot presentation standards
Establish procedures for managing and disposing of over-aged inventory
Review and audit trade-in appraisals and attend auctions as needed
Ensure timely reconditioning of used vehicle inventory

Operational Management

Review monthly forecasts, commission reports, productivity metrics, and profitability performance
Work closely with other departments to ensure smooth dealership operations
Facilitate new-vehicle pre-delivery coordination with the Service Department
Maintain dealership facilities to ensure a professional and secure environment

Marketing & Market Analysis

Analyze local market conditions, demographics, and sales history
Make recommendations regarding advertising strategy, promotions, and compensation plans
Lead major sales promotions and advertising initiatives including digital and traditional campaigns

Customer Experience

Address escalated customer concerns and maintain a high level of customer satisfaction
Implement processes that support a consistent and positive dealership experience

Additional Responsibilities

Issue and monitor demonstrator vehicles
Attend management meetings as requested
Perform other duties as assigned to support dealership operations
