Job Overview
We are seeking a Controller (Head of Accounting) to own and build the company’s accounting function. This role is responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial reporting and will serve as the operational backbone of finance.
This is not an office manager role. This is a hands-on accounting leadership role with full ownership of financial operations.
What This Role Owns
1. Monthly Close & Financial Reporting
- Lead monthly close (target ≤10 business days)
- Produce accurate, GAAP-compliant financial statements
- Own balance sheet integrity (reconciliations, accruals, prepaids)
- Establish and enforce close process and discipline
2. Dealership Accounting Operations
- Oversee capping and booking of all vehicle deals
- Ensure proper revenue recognition and cutoff
- Own COGS matching and inventory accounting
- Reconcile finance contract funding from lenders
- Maintain accuracy across Dealertrack and internal systems
3. AP / AR / Cash Oversight
- Oversee AP and AR processes (not primary executor long-term)
- Ensure timely vendor payments and clean receivables
- Maintain daily cash visibility and reporting discipline
- Identify and resolve discrepancies proactively
4. Inventory & Deal Flow Accuracy
- Reconcile inventory and deal flow across systems
- Partner with sales/admin to ensure complete and accurate deal jackets
- Ensure funding timelines and documentation integrity
5. Systems & Process Improvement
- Build scalable accounting processes and controls
- Improve reporting accuracy and reduce manual work
6. Team Leadership
- Build and manage accounting support (AP/AR, admin roles)
- Establish accountability and performance standards
- Create structure where it does not currently exist
What This Role Does NOT Own
To maintain focus and scalability, this role does NOT include:
- HR or employee management administration
- Payroll processing (outsourced)
- IT support or systems administration (outsourced)
- General office management duties
What Success Looks Like (First 6–12 Months)
- Month-end close consistently completed in ≤10 days
- Clean, reliable financials with zero surprises
- Fully reconciled balance sheet
- Clear visibility into cash, inventory, and margins
- Improved deal flow accuracy and reduced errors
- Scalable accounting processes in place
Ideal Candidate
Experience
- 5–10+ years in accounting within an automotive dealership or inventory-heavy business
- Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, or strong Accounting Manager experience
- Deep experience with Dealertrack or similar DMS
- Experience managing close and full accounting cycle
Skills
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial controls
- Detail-oriented with high ownership
- Process-driven with ability to build structure
- Comfortable working hands-on while improving systems

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $100,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
