Job Description
We are a small independent auto dealership looking for an experienced Automotive Shop Manager / Service Manager to oversee the daily operation of our service department.
This is primarily a management position, not a technician position. However, a strong automotive mechanical background is required.
We need someone who understands vehicle diagnostics, repairs, labor times, and parts well enough to manage technicians effectively. You should be able to review a mechanic's diagnosis and determine whether the recommended repairs and parts are actually necessary.
Our goal is to keep vehicles moving through the shop efficiently while controlling unnecessary parts, labor, and repair expenses.
Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise the daily work of our automotive technicians and auto detailer
- Assign, prioritize, and monitor repair work
- Review technician diagnoses and repair recommendations
- Verify that recommended repairs and parts are actually necessary
- Prevent unnecessary, duplicate, or incorrect parts from being ordered
- Understand expected labor times and monitor repair completion times
- Use ALLDATA and other automotive repair resources to verify repair procedures, specifications, and labor times
- Order automotive parts through local vendors, online suppliers, RepairLink, and other sources
- Source both new and used automotive parts when appropriate
- Compare pricing and help control parts and repair costs
- Purchase or pick up parts locally when necessary
- Verify that correct parts are received before installation
- Monitor parts orders, backorders, availability, and delivery times
- Keep track of every vehicle currently being repaired and its status
- Identify vehicles that are taking too long to complete and determine the cause of the delay
- Handle warranty-related repairs and prepare warranty estimates
- Review warranty repairs before parts and labor are authorized
- Assist customers with repair, warranty, and service concerns after the sale
- Professionally handle customer service complaints
- Prepare repair estimates and coordinate repair approvals
- Follow up with technicians to ensure repairs are completed correctly and on time
- Coordinate vehicle detailing and preparation
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional service department
- Make sure the shop is properly closed and secured at the end of each day
- Provide management with daily and weekly progress reports
- Report completed vehicles, pending repairs, parts needed, delays, technician productivity, and major mechanical issues
- Notify management of unusual or major repair expenses before unnecessary money is spent
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of automotive industry/mechanical experience
- Strong automotive mechanical knowledge is required
- Strong understanding of automotive diagnostics and repairs
- Knowledge of automotive parts and common repair procedures
- Must understand realistic automotive labor times
- Must be able to evaluate technician recommendations rather than simply approving everything requested
- Previous experience as an automotive technician, mechanic, shop foreman, service manager, shop manager, or similar position preferred
- Experience using ALLDATA or similar automotive repair software
- Experience sourcing and ordering automotive parts
- Dealership or independent repair shop experience preferred
- Valid driver's license
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who has actually worked in the automotive repair industry and understands vehicles mechanically, but is ready to spend most of their time managing the operation rather than physically working on cars.
You should be comfortable looking at a technician's repair recommendation and determining:
"Yes, that makes sense and we need it," or "No, that repair or part isn't necessary."
The Shop Manager will be responsible for keeping the shop productive, controlling repair and parts costs, keeping vehicles moving, managing the team, assisting customers, and keeping management informed.
This is a great opportunity for an experienced mechanic, technician, shop foreman, or service manager who wants to move into a management-focused position.
